Dereham Men’s 1st XI 2 Cambridge City 3

Dereham were unable to finish the season with another home victory as they came up against a Cambridge side who are pushing to win the league and gain National League status.

The visitors were quick to assert their pressure, and pushed Dereham back into their own half. They eventually took the league following their first short corner with a low drag flick to the bottom right. Dereham pushed forward, but were unable to assert any pressure before the away side doubled their advantage by creating an overload on the left allowing the Cambridge player to have a free shot from the back post. 2 soon became 3 with another short corner drag flick. The home team were rocking.

Dereham were able to pull one goal back just before the break with a short corner of their own, with Mark Hunter adding his 13th goal in an impressive season for the centre back. Dereham had their chances before the break to pull back level, but were unable to finish the opportunities.

Dereham piled on the pressure in the second half, and pushed to try to find a way back in to the tie. The second half ebbed and flowed in both directions, with each team creating chances, but unable to put the ball into the back of the net. It was Ric Timm who finally broke through, and buried his strike to bring Dereham back within 1 goal (this also levelled up the team’s top scorer competition with Hunter).

This goal rejuvenated the home side, and they pressed to find an equaliser. The visitors held firm, and the relief as tangible when the final whistle blew.
